SLCC

St. George • SLCC looked to be in the driver’s seat for its first chance at playing for an NJCAA national softball title since 2013 before defending champion Chipola broke the Bruins’ hearts.

Catcher Liz Osburn — in her only at-bat — lined a full-count pitch for a bases-clearing, two-out double that capped a five-run rally in the top of the seventh inning, and the Indians held on for a stunning 9-7 win Saturday that eliminated the Bruins from the NJCAA National Championship at the Canyons Complex.

“We had this game, but in stranding 12 runners, we played not to lose instead of playing to win,” SLCC coach Cyndee Bennett said. “They had a moment any player dreams of.”
